Kisspeptin, encoded by the KISS1 gene, is a neuropeptide that serves as the master upstream regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Its mechanism involves binding to the G-protein coupled receptor GPR54 (KISS1R), leading to the potent stimulation of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) neurons. This results in the subsequent pulsatile release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), which are critical for gonadal maturation and steroidogenesis.
