Kisspeptin

Kisspeptin, encoded by the KISS1 gene, is a neuropeptide that serves as the master upstream regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Its mechanism involves binding to the G-protein coupled receptor GPR54 (KISS1R), leading to the potent stimulation of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) neurons. This results in the subsequent pulsatile release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), which are critical for gonadal maturation and steroidogenesis. Research applications for Kisspeptin are vast, including studying the etiology of idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH), investigating the neuroendocrine control of puberty onset, and exploring therapeutic strategies for infertility. It is also studied for its role in suppressing metastasis in certain cancer lines. Due to its rapid degradation in serum, researchers often utilize it in continuous perfusion systems to study pulse-chase dynamics.
